In the beginning of Coded Bias, Joy Buolamwini, a computer scientist at the MIT Media Lab, stumbled upon a flaw in a facial recognition software while working on computer vision art technology. Unfortunately, Buolamwini discovered that this particular facial recognition technology failed to register her face until she wore a white mask, signifying how technology further perpetuates the biases of the people who develop these algorithmic systems.
